What is the difference between ERE and HBE?

HBE (Renewable Fuel Unit) measured renewable energy volume in gigajoules and was primarily intended for companies with large charging infrastructure. ERE opens participation for private households and small businesses. Registration is done through authorized booking service providers.

Can I register ERE certificates myself?

Only if you meet the threshold requirements: either 2,000,000 kWh annual volume OR 200 authorizations from other charger owners. For most individuals and small businesses, it's easier to work through an authorized provider. With Plugchoice you compare providers and choose yourself.

MID (Measuring Instruments Directive) is a European certification for measuring accuracy. Only electricity measured by MID-certified meters qualifies for ERE registration. Most Volt Time chargers have a built-in MID meter. Log in to Plugchoice to check if your charger is eligible.

I have solar panels. Does that affect my ERE earnings?

For private households, the NEa uses the national grid average renewable percentage, regardless of solar panels. For companies with proper measurement and documentation, directly consumed solar electricity may qualify for a higher renewable percentage.

When will I receive payment?

ERE registration follows the calendar year. The booking deadline is March 1 for the previous year's deliveries. Settlement and payment usually take place in Q1 of the following year, after verification and sale of the ERE certificates.

Is my charger brand supported?

Can I switch booking service providers?

Yes. Your authorization can be revoked and granted to another provider. With Plugchoice, your charger stays connected, even while switching. Note: already registered ERE certificates cannot be transferred. New registrations will be done by your new provider.

What about existing HBE registrations?

HBE certificates can be converted to ERE at a ratio of 46 ERE per 1 HBE. The NEa manages this transition as part of the system changeover. Contact your current provider for specific details.

Emission Reduction Units explained

The European Union requires fuel companies to invest increasingly in renewable energy. They do this by purchasing ERE certificates from people like you. Every kilowatt-hour you charge can be converted into a tradeable certificate, and you receive payment for it.

How does it work?

What does a booking service provider do?

A booking service provider registers ERE certificates on your behalf with the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa). They collect (often manually) the measurement data from your charger, handle the administration, and sell the certificates directly or indirectly to fuel companies and others. The revenue is paid out, minus a commission.

Can my charger participate?

Your charger must have a certified meter (MID meter). Most modern chargers already have this built in.

What do you need?

A charger with a MID-certified kWh meter (most modern chargers have this)
